Abstract:

This report presents results of a study to determine the distribution of Cicindela arenicola within Owhyee County and to estimate the size of the C. arenicola population at Bruneau Dunes State Park. The surveys outside Bruneau Dunes State Park disclosed the presence of a previously unknown population of the dunes tiger beetle, though very few adults and larvae were found. The park contained all other known populations. Number of adults seen in the largest beetle-inhabited portion of the park (2.7 beetles/ha) was much lower than those observed (7.6 beetles/ha) during a 1989 survey. The authors discuss difficulties in counting adults and express concerns that invasion by species such as cheatgrass and Russian thistle on the bare dunes are a significant reason for seeing fewer adults, who seem to need bare dunes (for foraging, mating) to exist. Management recommendations are included in this report and are addressed separately for three groups: the various small and scattered subpopulations within the park, the extensive subpopulation in one portion of the park, and the newly discovered site outside the park.
