Abstract:

Recently updated central Biotics data for taxa in the genus Parnassia from the treatment in Kartesz (1999) to follow the Flora of North America, vol. 12 (2016). Most species in the genus were unchanged, but there were some significant changes for a few which may involve plants in your states. You can check the FNA (2016) treatment here: http://www.efloras.org/florataxon.aspx?flora_id=1&taxon_id=124074

The following description is an attempt to explain how I believe taxa accepted in Kartesz (1999) are treated in the FNA treatment. The diagram gives more detail regarding what this means for Elcodes.

Parnassia palustris sensu FNA includes (distinct varieties not recognized):
P. californica
P. palustris var. palustris
P. palustris var. tenuis
B. palustris var. montanensis (in part?)

Parnassia parviflora sensu FNA includes:
P. palustris var. parviflora
possibly P. palustris var. montanensis in part

--Note: I am not sure about P. palustris var. montanensis without examining collections, but while FNA includes P. palustris var. montanensis only in the synonymy of P. palustris, the only variety of P. palustris reported for the southwest by Kartesz (1999) was P. palustris var. montanensis. Kartesz had no reports of var. parviflora in southwestern states. Since FNA does report both P. palustris and P. parvilfora for southwestern states, it seems likely that some of the reports included in the circumscription of var. montanensis by Kartesz are what FNA treats as P. parviflora. I defer to your local expertise on this. For purposes of data management, it did not seem correct to treat P. palustris var. parvilfora sensu Kartesz (1999) as equivalent in concept to P. parviflora sensu FNA.

Parnassia cirrata - FNA recognizes:
P. cirrata var. cirrata - which I believe is equivalent in concept to P. cirrata in narrow sense of Kartesz (1999)
P. cirrata var. intermedia - which includes P. fimbriata var. hoodiana and P. fimbriata var. intermedia sensu Kartesz (1999)

Parnassia fimbriata –
In the narrow sense of FNA, this is what is left when P. fimbriata var. hoodiana and var. intermedia are moved to P. cirrata and is thus equivalent in concept to P. fimbriata var. fimbriata sensu Kartesz (1999)

Parnassia kotzebuei
FNA does not accept distinct varieties.
