Abstract:

This report summarizes IDFG’s population-monitoring efforts during the 2004 field season. Objectives were to (1) continue long-term mark-recapture studies at 5 intensive monitoring sites, (2) conduct extensive surveys at other known sites not trapped to estimate numbers present, and (3) explore various survey techniques to improve population estimates.
Overall, the NIDGS population appears stronger in 2004 than the lows reported 3–4 years ago, although this species still occurs most frequently in small, potentially vulnerable colonies. New discoveries or expansions of sites on private land are particularly worrisome as development pressures increase throughout the range. As occurred last year, the overall estimate of NIDGS has increased, but at least some of that increase can be attributed to survey techniques and effort as we continue to refine our approach to population monitoring.
