Abstract:

Wyoming wildlife researchers working at Fort Laramie National Historic Site in Goshen County have detected the fungus that causes white-nose syndrome (WNS) in bats, the first such finding in the state. Testing of skin-swab samples collected from the wing of a little brown bat confirmed the presence of the fungus Pseudogymnoascus destructans (Pd for short). Further testing is in progress. Wyoming and the NPS are implementing state and national response plans. The news release also provides information about some of the history of the spread of the fungus and disease (which is not known to affect humans or pets) and protocol for avoiding the spread of the fungus and includes web links to additional information and resources.
