Abstract:

Recent observations during research on insect borers southern hardwoods have revealed considerable predation by woodpeckers. Although it is well known that woodpeckers feed upon wood-boring insects, most pertinent literature is based upon stomach analyses and deals with borers of dead and decaying wood. This paper reports predation on 14 species of insect borers infesting trunks and branches of living hardwood trees Stoneville, Miss., and Archer Island, Arkansas, between 1962 and 1968. While the information is not from formal studies, it may be of some use to those who wish to pursue the subject systematically.
