Abstract:

This report presents the findings of the Wildlife Conservation Society, Idaho Department of fish and Game, and Idaho Transportation Department together examining the impacts of US 20 on seasonal and daily movements and habitat use of both elk and moose. The major goal of the project was to identify highway crossing locations, patterns of resource selection at those crossing locations, and timing of crossings (e.g., daily and seasonal). Another goal was to understand habitat parameters (e.g., habitat type, terrain ruggedness, amount of horizontal concealment cover, distance to water) and features associated with roads (e.g., number of lanes, speed limit, road width) that both elk and moose were using when crossing highways. In addition, movement corridors connecting winter and summer range for migrating elk and moose were examined. This cooperative project was devised to help inform management plans to reduce wildlife-vehicle collisions and (human, vehicle, and) wildlife mortality (and injury) while maintaining habitat connectivity for wildlife. Key findings are presented here.
