Abstract:

The population estimates for the last five years show that the wolf-population in Norway and adjacent areas of Sweden and Finland is at the same level as reported in 1960's and 1970's. The wolf-population in Norway in the last 35 years seems to relate and have much in common with the situation in our neighbouring countries. This fact makes wolf management in Norway a joint Fennoscandian matter. Recent years reproduction in Sweden, only a few kilometers from the Southeast Norwegian area and the Norwegian border, represent a chance for saving the wolf in Scandinavia. This is the only place in Scandinavia where reproduction of wolves are confirmed during 1980-1984. However, local opposition, rising from fears for human safety, as well as moose and sheep predation, continue to jeopardize the future of this threatened species in Scandinavia.
