Abstract:

The slant-faced grasshoppers of the Group Chrysochraontes are centered around the Palaearctic genus Chrysochraon Fischer. There are six Nearctic species grouped in four genera, and there are about twice as many Palaearctic species, also in four genera, which arc distinct from the Nearctic genera. Rehn and Bey-Bienko reviewed the group on a world basis, pointing out the close relationship of Nearetic and Palaearctic members of the group, and Bey-Bienko and Mistshenko have summarized the systematics of the Palacarctic species. Our new genus, Barracris, is very similar to Podismopsis Zuhowsky, and the similarity appears to support the opinion of Rehn that in the past there have been intercontinental migrations from Eurasia. This synopsis results from a pooling of interests, combining observations by Strohecker on a new Idaho genus, which at present is a rarity and an outstanding addition to the Nearctic fauna, with work on a new species of Napaia McNeill, which has been collected repeatedly during the past few years and studied by Gurney and Helfer.
