Abstract:

This report on mountain goats is the result of a statewide study conducted on big game population status and trends, associated habitat, and hunting results during the period July 1, 2012, to June 30, 2013. Mountain goat populations in the state are small and fragmented, with animals scattered throughout central Idaho wilderness as well as in the Panhandle, Hells Canyon area, and the Snake River range. Populations appear to be declining slightly, although data are limited. Fifty-two tags were issued for mountain goat (hunting, one animal allowed per tag) for the fall 2012 hunting season (one was a rain check from the 2011 season). Hunters harvested 39 mountain goats (harvest success was 75%; 82% of harvested animals were male). This report provides information from the Panhandle, Clearwater, Southwest (McCall), Southwest (Nampa), Magic Valley, Upper Snake, and Salmon regions. Topics discussed by region are management direction, background information, population survey results (including tabulated results from previous years), harvest characteristics, and management implications. Information about climate conditions, habitat conditions, and capture and translocation is also included when applicable. In addition the report includes a few pages (about hunting seasons, hunt area descriptions, and hunt boundaries) of the IDFG “Moose, Bighorn Sheep and Mountain Goat Controlled Hunt Seasons and Rules, 2011 and 2012,” with major changes highlighted in yellow. Forty-eight tags were offered for 2013; all were filled in the first drawing.
