Abstract:

This letter summarizes the findings of a January 18, 1997, survey of Papoose Cave for winter use by bats. The survey was conducted by Lyle Lewis of the Bureau of Land Management and accompanied by Jim Langdon and two members each from the Gem State Grotto and the Papoose Project. Twenty-nine bats were found and identified as Townsend's big-eared bat (Corynorhinus townsendii). One dead bat was thought to be Myotis (either lucifigus or yumanensis; little brown bat or Yuma myotis). The dead bat and presence of guano suggest that the cave is used as a night roost in summer, but verification is recommended. Recommendations are made in the interest of safeguarding bat use of the cave.
