Abstract:

In spring 2009, the Bureau of Land Management established a cooperative agreement with Idaho Department of Fish and Game to inventory for Mulford‘s milkvetch (Astragalus mulfordiae), a rare plant species, in the Bruneau Competitive Use Area, Owyhee County, Idaho. In addition, other special status plants known to occur within the study area were documented if incidentally discovered. Inventories targeted OHV recreation trails within 2 km (1.2 mi) of 9 known Mulford‘s milkvetch monitoring transects. Trimble Nomad GPS units were used to map plants of interest and track routes. More than 80 km (49 mi) of OHV trails were surveyed. Seven of 10 special status plants known to occur in the Bruneau Competitive Use Area were observed. Twenty-one new observations were discovered, and 5 known occurrences were re-located. New observations include: Mulford‘s milkvetch, Snake River milkvetch (Astragalus purshii var. ophiogenes), desert pincushion (Chaenactis stevioides), white eatonella (Eatonella nivea), Packard‘s buckwheat (Eriogonum shockleyi var. packardiae), white-margined wax plant (Glyptopleura marginata), and rigid threadbush (Nemacladus rigidus). Noxious weeds and one animal species of greatest conservation need, the long-bill curlew (Numenius americanus), were also recorded.
