Abstract:

The authors provide a general discussion of the biology, habitat requirements, pollination ecology, and taxonomy of three bumble bee species that have experienced declines: Bombus affinis, B. terricola, and B. occidentalis. They also describe more specifically each species’ pollination ecology, population distribution, and population status. Threats to bumble bees—including spread of disease and pests by commercial bee producers and transporters, inadequate regulatory mechanisms, habitat alteration, pesticides, and invasive species—are also discussed. An appendix notes museum collection specimens (including Idaho specimens) and locales from which bees were collected in the past.
