Abstract:

This report details the assessment of inactive mines in northern Idaho for bat populations. The main study area occurs in the Greater Coeur d' Alene Mining Region, an area largely bounded at the eastern edge near Mullan to the western edge near Pinehurst. Sites located and assessed during the second year of study are reviewed. Text and tables reviewing the first year of effort are available in Keller (1995b). During the second summer of study, seven mines near the town of Murray, Burke Quadrangle, were evaluated to extend the scope of the study north of the Silver Valley.· An additional 28 inactive mine sites were sought in areas partly studied during the first year of study (no. and quads: 1–Kellog West; 9–Masonia; 9–0sburn; 4–Polaris Peak; and 5–Twin Crags. All five Twin Crags sites were reached by trail bike. In 35 searches, 24 mines sites were located, yielding only 8 open portals. Three sites were netted in the evening. During mid-winter 1996, eight mines were searched for hibernating bats as a result of data collected during the first and second summers of study. Only one adit, located in the Clark Fork area, contained bats during January and March. This single adit historically has supported bats including Townsend's big-eared bat (Corynorhinus townsendii). Field work was completed by Barry Keller and Rick Saathoff during August 1995 and January 1996. Saathoff completed an additional late winter assessment of two inactive mines (Rock Creek and Clark Fork #1) in March 1996.
