Abstract:

One of the most concentrated nesting areas of the Ferruginous Hawk (Buteo regalis) in southeastern Idaho is in the Little Lost River valley, Butte County, and on the adjacent Idaho National Engineering Laboratory (INEL) site, a large government reservation in Butte and Jefferson counties on the Snake River Plain. Sagebrush (Artemisia spp.) is the prominent shrub and Utah juniper (Juniperus osteosperma) the prominent tree on the INEL site. In the Little Lost River valley, shadscale (Atriplex confertifolia) is the most common shrub. The study area encompasses approximately 1300 sq. miles. In 1972, there were 11 active nests on the study area. However, in 1975, Ferruginous Hawks attended nests in only seven areas.
