The Columbia ground squirrel (Ord, 1815), a stout-bodied ground squirrel with relatively short, dense pelage, lives in the Rocky Mountain region of western Montana, Idaho, northeastern Washington, southeastern British Columbia, and western Alberta, generally in alpine or subalpine meadows. Besides the species’ general characteristics and distribution, this account summarizes what is known of its form and physiological function, ontogeny and reproduction, ecology, genetics, and behavior.
