Abstract:

This document describes the biology, ecology, and conservation status of the Great Basin spadefoot toad (Spea intermontana) throughout its current range, with particular attention given to the portion occurring within and near Wyoming. The authors’ goal was to provide a summary of published information and expert interpretation of the information that can be used by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) to develop management plans. The authors present what is known about the toad’s habitat requirements, movement and activity patterns, reproduction, food habits, and community ecology. Their assessment includes conservation status and addresses extrinsic threats (such as habitat alteration, environmental contamination, invasive species), as well as intrinsic threats (related the species’ particular habitat specificity and site fidelity, territoriality and area requirements, susceptibility to disease, dispersal capacity, reproductive capacity). The authors recommend that management actions should insure that key life history stages (terrestrial and aquatic) are undisturbed, habitat connectivity is preserved for persistence of the populations, and exposure to potentially detrimental chemicals is eliminated. The authors hope that continual and consistent monitoring of known populations and fulfilling the information needs listed in the document will clarify population status and contribute to refining conservation goals. An extensive literature cited section is provided.
