Abstract:

This U. S. Fish and Wildlife species assessment and listing priority assignment form provides the rationale for continuing Candidate status for the southern Idaho ground squirrel and changing the species' listing the priority number to 8 (magnitude moderate to low, immediacy imminent for a species). Discussed is the petition history for the species, the species’ location/distribution and land ownerships involved, and biological information (description of the species; taxonomy; habitat/life history; current and historical range/distribution in Idaho; and current status in those states). Threats to the species are reviewed, including habitat fragmentation and degradation (the major threat); direct killing from shooting, trapping or poisoning; predation; competition with Columbian ground squirrels; inadequacy of existing regulatory mechanisms; and other natural and human caused factors. Conservation measures planned and implemented are also described, and recommended conservation measures listed.
