Abstract:

This USFWS form for species assessment and listing priority for the Columbia Spotted Frog (Rana luteiventris) was prepared for continuing the frog’s status as a Candidate for listing species. The form summarizes biological information for the species: description, taxonomy, habit/life history, historical range and distribution, current range/distribution (NV, ID, OR), population estimates and status, and distinct population segment distinction for the Great Basin population. Threats are summarized in several categories. Present and threatened destruction and modification of the frog's habitat or range include impacts from activities that have changed hydrology of meadows and springs and/or led to fragmentation of habitats used by this frog---activities including livestock grazing, beaver management, and mining; the evaluation found significant information of impact for this category. Predation by nonnative species was found to be a threat to the Columbia spotted frog rangewide. The evaluation also found inadequacy in existing regulatory mechanisms to adequately protect the species. Impacts associated with climate change are expected to intensify threats previously described, through drought, fire, and UV-B radiation. Other human activities, including pesticide and herbicide use which may be impacting populations, are also of concern. Recommended conservation measures are listed. An extensive literature cited section is also included.
