Abstract:

This progress report presents results of a project conducted to monitor populations of the southern Idaho ground squirrel (Urocitellus brunneus endemicus) in southwestern Idaho. In 2011, monitoring of squirrels using mark-recapture methods continued on public and private lands. Researchers resurveyed historical squirrel locations along routes that were surveyed in 1999. Presence or absence of squirrels was determined by visual detection or presence of burrows or fecal pellets. Researchers also conducted vegetation sampling to determine cover of native and exotic vegetation. In 2011, of the 89 ground squirrel sites surveyed (of the 154 historical sites surveyed in 1999), 47 (53%) were occupied, and 42 (47%) appeared to be unoccupied.
