Abstract:

Although widely distributed in North America, and in numerous disjunct populations in the Great Plains and Rocky Mountain states, the status of the smooth green snake (smooth greensnake) (Opheodrys vernalis) is poorly known in the Rocky Mountain Region of the USDA Forest Service. This conservation assessment includes a review of the biology and ecology of the snake (including description, systematics, distribution and abundance, population trend, activity and movement patterns, habitat, food and feeding habits, breeding biology, population demography, and community ecology). Issues of conservation concern are explored and described, such as threats to the species (including intrinsic vulnerability and extrinsic factors: roads, resource extraction, livestock, recreation commercial collection, biocides, den destruction, fire, prey reduction, extreme weather events), conservation status in Region 2, management implications in the region, potential and recommended management practices and tools, and information needs. References are included and, in an appendix, a matrix population analysis.
