Abstract:

There are four group tendencies which mark the transition from the dark, brown-backed bird with paler-colored underparts in the northwest to the more plumbeous-backed population with darker underparts in the mountains of northern Lower California. Four geographic races or subspecies should, therefore, be recognized. From north to south these four steps are described, comparatively, from individual male specimens, selected to represent the average characters of each population.
