Abstract:

The genera of the Gomphocerinae (sensu Uvarov) are reviewed and an attempt is made to relate them using external characters. A list is given of those genera not examined in this rapid preliminary study (but see also Bei-Bienko and Mistshenko, 1951, and Descamps and Wintrebert, 1966). Characters previously used for systematics and diagnosis in this subfamily are discussed, and the concept of the subfamily Gomphocerinae critically circumscribed. An illustrated key to genera and a numerical analysis of correlation between genera are given. In all, 26 genera are newly synonymized and 5 genera or subgenera described. In addition, 8 genera have been given subgeneric rank within other genera. Eight species are newly described and three species names synonymized. Affinities between the faunas of Africa, Asia, and the New World are given special attention (e.g., Mesopsis, the Stenobothrus complex, Notopomala-Paropomala-Goniocara, Pellopedon-Eleutherotheca-Cophohippus, Rhaphotittha-Dnopherula-Eritettix, the Chrysochraon complex, and others). Patterns of speciation such as those found in Achurum, Amphitornus, Zapata and Eritettix, are highlighted in the hope that research into the ecology and genetics of these groups will be stimulated.
