Abstract:

This proposed recovery strategy for the half-moon hairstreak (Satyrium semiluna) in Canada is composed of two parts. Part 1 is the “Federal Addition to the ‘Recovery Strategy for the Half-moon Hairstreak (Satyrium semiluna) in British Columbia and Alberta,’” prepared by Environment Canada. Part 2 is the “Recovery Strategy for the Half-moon Hairstreak (Satyrium semiluna) in British Columbia and Alberta,” prepared by the British Columbia Southern Interior Invertebrates Recovery Team for the British Columbia Ministry of Environment. Part 1 contains information about the species’ status, recovery objectives for population and distribution, broad strategies and general approaches to meet objectives (planning table), and critical habitat for the species (identification, schedule of studies to identify critical habitat, examples of activities likely to destroy critical habitat). Effects on the environment and other species (because of overlapping ranges of rare species) are also considered. Part 2 contains information about the half-moon hairstreak’s biology and life history, populations and distribution, and habitat and biological needs. Threats to the species are also discussed. Recovery goals and objectives are then presented, as well as approaches for meeting recovery goals, including filling both information needs about and habitat needs for the species.
