Abstract:

In 1974-1976 a car survey of nonbreeding raptors and a raptor nest inventory were conducted in southeastern Idaho as a part of a baseline study on the Idaho National Engineering Laboratory (INEL). Black-tailed jack rabbits (Lepus californicus), a major prey species for large raptors on the INEL, were scarce in 1974-1976, but in 1981-1982 the population had increased dramatically. The present study was conducted to determine changes in eagle and buteo population levels between 1974-1976 and 1981-1982.
