Abstract:

Rivers and streams in the Idaho Panhandle, north of Whitebird, were surveyed for a rare riparian lichen species. The region was stratified into nine geographic units and by stream size. Eighty-one plots were surveyed for lichen community, stand characteristics, and river characteristics. One hundred and twenty-five lichen species were found. Eleven of the sixteen rare target species were found. About seventy percent of the plots had at least one of the target species. Twenty percent of the plots had Collema curtisporum, which is a rare riparian lichen found in parts of Scandinavia and the Pacific Northwest. Northern Idaho is considered to be the population center in the Pacific Northwest for Collema curtisporum. Collema curtisporum, Lobaria hallii, and Pseudocyphellaria anthraspis are suggested for reduced status with the Idaho Conservation Data Center (ICDC). Six species are suggested for listing with the ICDC: Cetraria sepincola, Physconia americana, Pseudocyphellaria anomala, Ramalina pollinaria, Ramalina subleptocarpha, and Ramalina thrausta. Collema furfuraceum is suggested for removal from the ICDC listings.
