Abstract:

This Environmental Assessment (EA) has been prepared by the Burley Field Office of the United States (US) Department of the Interior, Bureau of Land Management (BLM) for a proposal to drill five exploratory geothermal wells on public lands administered by the BLM in the Raft River Valley, Cassia County, Idaho. This EA documents the site-specific environmental analysis from implementing the proposed action or from taking no action (termed the “no action alternative”). In this EA, the BLM analyzes potential impacts from issuing five geothermal drilling permits and implementing an Operations Plan (OP) to explore geothermal resources within the Raft River Valley. Agua Caliente Limited Liability Corporation (LLC) (applicant and lease holder) submitted to BLM an OP in February 2009 as an application to construct five well pads and access roads, drill up to five deep exploration wells, and perform well testing. Based on coordination with the BLM and Idaho Department of Water Resources (IDWR), the OP was amended in March 2009 with additional information on the proposed drilling process. The OP is discussed in Section 2.1, Proposed Action.
