Abstract:

This report evaluates “peatlands” as an ecological theme addition to the classification of potential ecological landmarks used by the National Park Service for the National Natural Landmarks Program in the northern Rocky Mountains. The ecological and cultural values of peatlands are reviewed, and it is recommended that the existing ecological classification be modified to include a peatlands theme and two subthemes (Sphagnum-rich and Sphagnum-poor peatlands). Using four criteria—condition, inherent diversity, viability, and education and research potential—32 sites (19 in Idaho, two in Washington, and 11 in Montana) are identified as potential peatland National Natural Landmarks in the northern Rocky Mountains.
