Abstract:

This report summarizes IDFG’s population-monitoring efforts during the 2003 field season. Objectives were to (1) continue long-term mark-recapture studies at 5 intensive monitoring sites, (2) coordinate visits to other known sites to estimate numbers present, (3) coordinate surveys of new areas to discover new populations, and (4) begin a retrospective analysis of NIDGS population dynamics. The overall estimate of NIDGS has increased to ~700 individuals. We continue to lose sites with very low numbers, but we also have several new sites that squirrels have moved into, relocating in response to habitat manipulations, dispersing from parent sites, or both.
