Abstract:

Silene spaldingii (Spalding’s catchfly), a white-flowered perennial in the Pink family, is a federally listed Threatened Species and a BLM Type 1 Sensitive Species. It and another Threatened Species, Mirabilis macfarlanei (MacFarlane’s four-o’clock), have been recently examined by BLM, Forest Service, and Fish and Wildlife Service in an effort to standardize monitoring procedures for Threatened plants in Idaho. A set of initial data collected by a standardized method will provide a valuable baseline for assessing ecological condition and trends of populations and habitats. In summer 2010, BLM established three transects for Silene spaldingii and developed general plans for examining additional occurrences. In late summer 2011, we reassessed those three sites and established two additional transects using the standardized protocol, which included sampling associated vegetation using nested frequency data collection. This project was limited to collecting and archiving the data (without analysis), and those data are included in this report. During the course of this study, we also conducted an incidental visit to a known occurrence of another sensitive species, Pyrrocoma scaberula (= P. liatriformis, Palouse goldenweed).
