Abstract:

This group of mammals includes the most numerous and most widely-distributed species found in Idaho. There is much annual loss caused by certain of these animals, but the esthetic value, sport, propagation of seeds, and tremendous food sources they furnish both to man and to other groups of animals cause us to see them in their true light of being irreplaceable in Nature's scheme. Because of the interest generated by the ubiquitous members represented here, brief discussions of their descriptive features, ecological as well as geographical distribution, economic status, and methods of control are presented.
