Abstract:

MacFarlane’s four-o’clock (Mirabilis macfarlanei) is a striking, magenta-flowered, perennial forb in the four-o’clock family (Nyctaginaceae). MacFarlane’s four-o’clock is narrowly endemic to canyon grasslands of the lower Snake, Salmon, and Imnaha rivers in Oregon and Idaho. There are nine known element occurrences (EOs) for this species in Idaho, including one near Lower Pittsburg Landing (EO 6). Although a few of the subpopulations within this EO have been monitored in recent years, a comprehensive assessment of all subpopulations has not been conducted. Consequently, in late May 2012, we assessed and mapped all subpopulations within EO 6 to determine the current extent of subpopulations and to document habitat characteristics and disturbances. We were able to relocate all subpopulations, and our maps generally reflected the previous subpopulation locations. Data collected during the field assessment provided more precise point locations of plants within subpopulations and more current information on disturbances and associated species at the subpopulation level. These data will be used to update the Idaho Fish and Wildlife Information System (IFWIS) database.
