Abstract:

This letter to Craig Groves (Idaho Natural Heritage Program at Idaho Department of Fish and Game), 31 January, accompanied a copy of the Craters of the Moon National Monument Baseline Inventory and Monitoring Final Report by Roger Hoffman [we don't seem to have this report], as well as a photocopy of a map of the area of a Townsend's big-eared bat maternity colony. Hoffman reported that he'd seen Townsend's big-eared bats on several occasions in several lava tube caves. The bats were observed in 1987 and again in 1988. Hoffman and Sparhawk observed approximately 60 bats in mid-July 1988. On 16 August 1988, Sparhawk and Martha Wackenhut saw no bats and assumed they'd left for the season. Only one bat was observed in 1989 by Sparhawk and Martha Wackenhut over four trips made in May, June, and July.
