Abstract:

As you no doubt know, the drug taxol has shown exceptional promise as treatment for several types of cancer. At present, the only source of this drug approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for clinical tests on humans is the bark of the Pacific Yew (Taxus brevifolia). Under a Cooperative Agreement with private industry, the Forest Service makes yew bark available to the National Cancer Institute for further research and testing. We are proposing what we believe is a reasonable 1992 yew bark collection program outside existing timber harvest units while at the same time conserving the species and adhering to Forest Plan standards. We are interested in your views on this subject. Since the analysis is on a tight time line, we would like to have your ideas, thoughts, and concerns within the next three weeks.
