Volume 2, Part A: Subclasses Magnoliidae - Caryophyllidae. <br>

INTRODUCTION: Volume 2, Part A, of Intermountain Flora, treating Cronquist’s subclasses Magnoliidae, Hamamelididae, and Caryophyllidae, concludes the taxonomic treatments for the series. Treated in this, the eighth part, are 31 families, 147 genera, 611 species, and 301 varieties. A small Supplement, including a key to all families, a cumulative index, and a brief history of the Intermountain Flora project, will be published within the coming year. <br>

Volume 2A has been written by Noel H. Holmgren, Patricia K. Holmgren, James L. Reveal (Poly gonaceae), Daniel E. Atha (co-author of Persicaria), Richard Spellenberg (Nyctaginaceae), Arthur H. Holmgren (co-author of Montiaceae), and Wendy C. Hodgson, Andrew M. Salywon, Donald J. Pinkava, Charles Butterworth, and Marc A. Baker (Cactaceae). <br>

Species that occur in the Pacific Northwest as well as in the Intermountain region are here illustrated by drawings prepared by Jeanne R. Janish and published in Vascular Plants of the Pacific Northwest (Univ. Washington Publ. Biol. 17. 1955—1969). These drawings are reproduced with permission from the University of Washington Press. All other species (except Cactaceae) are illustrated with new drawings by Bobbi Angell and Laura Vogel. Illustrations of Cactaceae were prepared by Marsha M. Bennett, Karen Ann Gengle, Molly Coxson Gill, Elaine Hultgren, JoAnn Loza, Lynn Reves, Daniela G. Siroky, Sandra Turico, and Gigi Wilson. The illustrations by Bobbi Angell of Fal lopia convolvulus, Liquidambar styraciflua, Reynoutria japonica, and Rheum rhabarbarum were first published in The New York Times and are reproduced with permission from the artist.
