Abstract:

Volume 4, Subclass Asteridae (except Asteraceae)

INTRODUCTION: Volume 4 of our Flora, treating the Asteridae other than Asteraceae, is the third volume to be published, following on volumes 1 and 6. <br>

In this volume, as in others, some one or two authors are responsible for each segment of the work, the other authors acting only in advisory capacity. Patricia K. Holmgren continues to serve as general editor. Cronquist has written the treatments of the Adoxaceae, Boraginaceae, Callitrichaceae, Dipsacaceae, Hippuridaceae, Hydrophyllaceae, Menyanthaceae, Pedaliaceae, Plantaginaceae, Polemoniaceae, Rubiaceae, Valerianaceae, and Verbenaceae. Cronquist and Reveal have written the treatment of the Lamiaceae; Reveal and Cronquist have done the Cuscutaceae; and Cronquist and Arthur H. Holmgren have done the Caprifoliaceae. The basic manuscript for the Solanaceae was written several years ago by C. L. Hitchcock, and was recently brought up to date by Cronquist. In addition, Cronquist has written the synoptical keys to the orders and families and the descriptions of the orders. Noel H. Holmgren has written the Apocynaceae, Bignoniaceae, Buddlejaceae, Convolvulaceae, Gentianaceae, Lentibulariaceae, Oleaceae, Orobanchaceae, and Scrophulariaceae (the largest family in the volume). Patricia K. Holmgren has written the Campanulaceae, and she and Noel H. Holmgren have together done the Asclepiadaceae. <br>

A change in the International Code of Botanical Nomenclature, made at the XIII International Botanical Congress in 1981 , in Sydney, Australia, affects some of the names in our Flora. Under the new rules, an automatic tautonymous variety has priority over the varietal segregate that brought the tautonym into being, should the two ever be combined and subordinated to another species. Logical though the change may be, it requires new combinations I to replace some previously accepted varietal names in several genera, notably Castilleja. We have tried to bring our treatment into accord with the amended Code. <br>

Species that occur in the Pacific Northwest as well as in the Intermountain Region are here mostly illustrated by drawings that were prepared by Jeanne R. Janish and published in :] Vascular Plants of the Pacific Northwest (Univ. Wash. Publ. Biol. 17. 1955—69). These drawings are reproduced by the kind permission of the University of Washington Press. Other species in our Flora are illustrated by new drawings mainly by Bobbi Angell, Jeanne R. Janish, and Robin Jess; a few others have been done by Robin D. Brickman, Anneta Duveen, H. M. Fukuda, and William S. Moye.
