Abstract:

Volume Six, The Monocotyledons

This volume in the Intermountain Flora series treats such important families as the Poaceae, Cyperaceae, and Liliaceae.
INTRODUCTION: Volume 6 of our Flora, treating the monocotyledons, is chronologically the next volume to appear after volume 1 . We thought it desirable to make the treatment of the Poaceae available to land-use managers as soon as possible. Furthermore, the treatment of the Cyperaceae had been written several years ago and needed only minor updating for publication at this time. We trust that librarians and bibliographers will not be unduly inconvenienced by this unorthodox but to us useful sequence of volumes.
In this volume, as in others, some one or two authors are responsible for each segment of the work, the other authors serving only in advisory capacity. We have added Patricia K. Holmgren to our group of authors. She serves as general editor, and she has written the treatment of the Iridaceae. The family Orchidaceae has been done by Arthur Holmgren, and the family Poaceae by Arthur Holmgren and Noel Holmgren together. Arthur Cronquist has done the Cyperaceae, the Juncaceae, and the genus Allium, the latter in collaboration with the late Marion Ownbey, a well-known student of the genus. The artificial key to the families and the synoptical arrangement of the subclasses are also by Cronquist. James Reveal has done all the remaining families: Agavaceae, Alismataceae, Butomaceae, Commelinaceae, Hydrocharitaceae, Juncaginaceae, Lemnaceae, Liliaceae (except Allium), Najadaceae, Potamogetonaceae, Ruppiaceae, Sparganiaceae, Typhaceae, and Zannichelliaceae.
We wish to emphasize that the Flora represents a cooperative effort not only by the several authors, but also by their respective institutions. Three of the authors (Cronquist, Noel Holmgren, and Patricia Holmgren) are based at the New York Botanical Garden; Arthur Holmgren is at Utah State University; Reveal is at the University of Maryland and also makes frequent use of the collections and facilities at the Smithsonian Institution.
Species that occur in the Pacific Northwest as well as in the Intermountain Region are mostly illustrated by drawings that were prepared by Jeanne R. Janish and published in Vascular Plants of the Pacific Northwest (Univ. Wash. Publ. Biol. 17. 1955—69). These drawings are reproduced by permission of the University of Washington Press. Other species in our Flora are illustrated by new drawings by Page R. Allen, Rupert C. Barneby, Charles C. Clare, Jeanne R. Janish, Melissa Marshall, William Moye III, Frances Runyan, and Kaye H. Thorne. The drawings of flowers of Elodea are taken from those of Harold St. John, with his kind permission.
