Abstract:

This report summarizes count information of wintering bats from surveys conducted on Bureau of Land Management's Shoshone Resource Area in 1987, 1988, 1993, and 1995. The percentage decrease in total bat numbers from 1987 to 1995 was calculated. (All 6 caves having bats in 1987 had a lower bat count in 1995.) Also presented were total bat numbers for caves inventoried for the first time in 1994. Threats to bat population viability are discussed, as well as problems facing Townsend's big-eared bats. Recommendations for investigation and management are made.
