Abstract:

This book is a field guide to the edible and poisonous plants of western North America. I covers an area ranging from the Mexican border north to Canada and Alaska, and from western Great Plains to the Pacific Ocean. In this text the information contained in the scientific literature as well as numerous edible and poisonous plant references is compiled and condensed. It is not an encyclopedia of all known information regarding the uses of edible and poisonous plants in western North America. It is not meant to be used to identify plants, but as a complement to a plant identification manual. Keys have been included in the text to distinguish edible species from potentially toxic look-alikes, serving as a final check that an identification made using a local or regional flora is correct. The keys ARE NOT designed to be used for identification of unknown plant specimens. Once a plant has been correctly identified using an appropriate plant identification manual, a brief summary of its edible or poisonous properties can be checked in this book.
