Abstract:

The Owyhee harvester ant, Pogonomyrmex salinus, is a common native inhabitant of open, grassy areas throughout southwest Idaho, including areas occupied by slickspot peppergrass, Lepidium papilliferum. Because P. salinus readily consume the seeds of L. papilliferum, their incursions into L. papilliferum habitat may have important consequences for the plant’s long-term prospects for survival. Understanding the factors that influence the spatial and temporal dynamics of P. salinus populations within L. papilliferum habitat is necessary to gauge the threat of these seed predators to L. papilliferum. The data presented in this report represent the culmination of a five year study aimed at monitoring harvester ant populations within L. papilliferum habitat and assessing which vegetation features of the habitat help to explain colony abundance and potential for growth.
