Abstract:

The young of the bushy-tailed woodrat (Neotoma cinerea) may begin to appear in traps when about 3 weeks of age. Because birth dates of the juvenile animals seldom are known, other means must be used to determine age. Egoscue presented a growth curve for N. cinerea using data from four laboratory-reared animals. Growth curves are also available for N. floridana. The growth curves reported herein were based upon data gathered from trapping sessions beginning 11 April and concluding 20 August 1970. Individual weights involving three males and 11 females reared in the wild were recorded 68 times. The population occupying an abandoned dwelling at elevation of 3200 feet, 7 mi. NE Moscow, Latah Co., Idaho, was chosen for the study because of the accessibility of several nests.
