Abstract:

Grizzly bears (Ursus arctos) represent a great challenge to wildlife management in North America. Recent findings from the Yellowstone area indicate that less than 50 breeding females may exist there. Heightened controversy over hunting grizzly bears in northwestern Montana, ongoing confrontations between bears and people in national parks, and controversy over management of grizzly bears that prey on ungulates in Alaska and Canada remain unsolved problems. We assembled information on the biology and human relations of grizzly bears to aid in management of this resource.
