Abstract:

This report provides an update of wolverine monitoring/study from December 2006 through March 2007. From December 28 to March 15, crew operated 11 traps in the Madison, Gravelly, Henrys Lake, and Centennial ranges. They recaptured 5 female wolverines (a total of 9 times) and replaced implants and outfitted each with a GPS collar; no new individuals were captured. Crew also conducted 2 aerial recreation surveys over each the Gravelly and Henrys Lake ranges. Data will be added to 14 previous winter surveys of those and 3 other ranges. The spring effort to collect reproduction data had begun, but to report date only 1 of the 7 radio-collared females had given indication of denning. One known mortality (due to avalanche) was document during the update period. And one kit (F133) captured last spring is dispersing; her movements have been tracked since the previous summer (from the north end of the Gallatin Range to the southern portion of the same range to the Madison Range and back to the Gallatin), and she will continue to be monitored.
