Abstract:

The purpose of this project was to provide geo-spatial support to the USFWS to assess several threats suspected of negative impact to existing populations of slickspot peppergrass. The use of geo-referenced data provided a means to examine how these threats were distributed relative to the species’ range. The USFWS provided spatial data pertaining to locations of existing populations (i.e. element occurrences or “EOs”), predicted distribution, consideration zone, and management areas. Utah State University (USU) was requested to identify the best available data relative to the following threats: 1) development, 2) wildfire, 3) invasive species, and to assess the extent to which each threat has affected the existing population and predicted distribution where a 15% or greater probability of occurrence has been determined. Spatial models were developed using ArcGIS Model Builder to provide a clear and comprehensive record for each analysis including original datasets and parameters used to produce the results. Output from the models were used to create a series of maps and tables that were compiled for this report.
