Abstract:

There were no records of rock squirrels (Spermophilus variegatus) from Idaho until Larrison and Johnson (1981) included the rock squirrel as an Idaho species on the basis of a photograph taken near Nounan, Bear Lake County and sight records from Oneida Narrows, Franklin County. However, there are still no published specimen records for the state. We report here 10 rock squirrel specimens from Oneida and Franklin Counties in southeastern Idaho, summarize the sight records for the species in Idaho, and comment on the subspecific affinities of the Idaho populations. All specimens are deposited in the Museum of Natural History, The College of Idaho, Caldwell, Idaho (CIMNH); Museum of Natural History, University of Kansas (KU); and Department of Biological Sciences, The University of Idaho (UIDA).
