Abstract:

The Little Lost River and Birch Creek Valleys in the BLM Upper Snake Field Office (BLM-USFO), has long been known as a hot spot for special status plant species. Of the 24 special status plants tracked in the BLM-USFO by the Idaho Natural Heritage Program (IDNHP), 15 are known from the Little Lost River and Birch Creek Valleys in east-central Idaho. These valleys have a complex geologic history that lends itself to supporting the unique substrates for special status plant species. There have been few, if any, comprehensive inventories of the Little Lost River and Birch Creek Valleys, particularly in wetland and riparian habitats. The objective of this project was to conduct a thorough, systematic, multi-species field inventory to clarify the conservation status of special status plant species occurring in the Little Lost River and Birch Creek Valleys.
In 2008, we conducted surveys during the weeks of June 16-20, July 14-17, and August 18-22. The 24 special status plant species known to occur on BLM-USFO lands that were targeted for inventory included: Spiranthes diluvialis (Ute ladies'-tresses), Astragalus amnis-amissi (Lost River milkvetch), Astragalus aquilonius (Lemhi milkvetch), Astragalus diversifolius (meadow milkvetch), Astragalus gilviflorus (plains milkvetch), Astragalus leptaleus (park milkvetch), Camissonia pterosperma (winged-seed evening primrose), Carex idahoa (Idaho sedge), Cuscuta denticulata <http://fishandgame.idaho.gov/cms/tech/CDC/spp_accounts_plants/cusden.cfm... (sepal-tooth dodder), Epilobium palustre (swamp willow-weed), Eriogonum capistratum var. welshii (Welsh's buckwheat), Ipomopsis polycladon (spreading gilia), Kobresia simpliciuscula (simple kobresia), Lomatogonium rotatum (marsh felwort), Orthotrichum hallii (Hall's orthtrichum moss), Piptatherum micranthum <http://fishandgame.idaho.gov/cms/tech/CDC/spp_accounts_plants/pipmic.cfm... (small-flowered ricegrass), Primula alcalina (alkali primrose), Salix candida (hoary willow), Salix pseudomonticola (false mountain willow), Saxifraga cernua (nodding saxifrage), Silene scaposa var. lobata (scapose silene), Trichophorum pumilum <http://fishandgame.idaho.gov/cms/tech/CDC/spp_accounts_plants/scirol.cfm... (Rolland bulrush), Eriogonum hookeri (Hooker's buckwheat), and Pediocactus simpsonii (Simpson's hedgehog cactus). These target species were generally associated with either calcareous wetlands and riparian areas or limestone cliffs, outcrops, and gravel slopes.
Fourteen special status plant species were re-located and/or discovered during the 2008 inventory. In addition, three species were discovered that should be evaluated for conservation status in Idaho, two which are pending results of species confirmation by Dr. I. Al-Shehbaz at the Missouri Botanical Garden. The areas where we found multiple special status plant species should be considered a high priority for rare plant conservation. These areas include Barney and Moffett Creeks, Moffett Springs, Summit Creek, Wet Creek, Hawley Mountain, Squaw Springs, East Canyon, Donkey Hills, and Reno Point. Updated and comprehensive information on the distribution, abundance, habitat, threats, and conservation status of these species will enable land managers to be proactive in their conservation actions and decisions for the upcoming BLM-USFO Resource Management Plan (RMP).
