Abstract:

In August of 1962 I collected three specimens of Plethodon vandykei in northwestern Montana. The specimens are assigned to the subspecies P. v. idahoensis on the basis of agreement with published descriptions. On August 5 an adult female was collected under a flat rock in the splash zone of a small brooklet emerging at roadside from a north-facing gulch of Big Hoodoo Mountain, 11 airline miles south of Libby, Lincoln County. Two juveniles were collected August 18 from within small-rock talus at the base of a cliff blasted out of the Kootenai River gorge for the Great Northern Railway and U. S. Highway 2. These collections establish a range extension of approximately 60 and 64 airline miles respectively from the nearest previously reported population of P. v. idahoensis, Fourth of July Canyon, Kootenai County, Idaho. These specimens represent the first plethodontid salamanders to be reported from the Montana herpetofauna.
