Abstract:

Blanchard presents observations of eggs and egg-laying in the smooth greensnake (Liopeltis [Liochlorophis, Opheodrys] vernalis). Observations were made over several years of snakes captured each summer from the wild and taken to the University of Michigan Biological Station. Most observations are egg related: the process of egg laying, a description of eggs, numbers of eggs in a clutch, dates of hatching, the time between egg laying and hatching, and process of hatching. Blanchard also describes young snakes and their feeding habits. He then summarizes his findings about these observations, some (e.g., hatching dates) in relation to findings in other studies.
