Abstract:

Report presents results of study designed to gather information about the breeding biology and habitat use of Flammulated Owls (Otus flammeolus) within the within the Lowman RD of the Boise NF of southern Idaho. In the first study year, researchers tested and refined techniques for surveying for and capturing Flammulated Owls, locating radio-tagged owls and their nests, and assessing habitat use of the radio-tagged owls. Nesting chronology and biology, demographics, movement patterns, and habitat use of the owls were documented. Data being gathered will help the researchers assess effects of changes in the habitat (underway with timber harvest and associated activities in the Rock Creek Project Area) on the Flammulated Owls in the study area. [Included in our file with the report are two Excel spreadsheets presenting detailed vegetation data by owl nest site and by plot location.]
