Abstract:

Twenty-four stands representative of 14 relatively undisturbed climax plant associations in eastern Washington and northern Idaho were sampled for their small mammal species composition during the summers of 1954 and 1955. The same bait, number and arrangement of traps was used in each stand to facilitate the comparison of trap results. Six hundred small mammals representing 11 species were trapped during 14,175 trap-days. The distribution of each species is discussed in relation to occurrences in the stands sampled. The definition of plant associations as particular combinations of unions is useful for expressing the variations in floristic composition and physiognomy which contribute to the vegetation requirements of small mammals.
