This website is designed to interest people in studying natural history and improve education about the natural world through the use of various tools that it makes available. Discover Life is an online encyclopedia of life, with over a million species pages, many with photos, information, and links to additional information. Because of the information and tools provided, the website's presence helps build a network of study sites across North America and allows participation in research projects, while aiding the collection of high-quality data for scientific use. The tools of the website enable designing hands-on ecological research projects, tracking migrations (such as of invasive species), mapping large collections and presenting information about species, uploading images and making life lists of species observed, and building online field guides, from simple (for beginners) to more complex or complete. Additional services can be provided to scientists.
